your family is probably turned off by the fact that you are questioning and it probably appears you are wanting money. Insurance proceeds just dont get paid to one person, it is sometimes used up front to pay off debts, such as funeral expenses, mortgage, etc etc. After those expenses are paid, it can be given to the executer or beneficiary(s). usually at that more expenses must be paid off, little debts here and there. sometimes not much is left once the debts are paid off. worry about it when it is your own parents.

Why would you need to know? The Executor files the claim, the insurance company writes a check to whoever the beneficiaries are, it gets mailed to them directly. No one else NEEDS to know. No one knows exactly WHO the beneficiary is, except the insurance company. It's not necessarily written on the policy - or it is the first time, but you can change it every week if you want to.

But it's pretty unusual that your grandmother HAD insurance. If they're denying that there's a policy, they're probably not lying.
