firstly make sure there is a large mirror in the room as mirrors reflect light and open out a small room, secondly never apply a bold colour in a small room you will just make it smaller, also don't wallpaper it either. depending on what furniture is in the room accessorise because they can be changed if you get tired of them, with bedrooms keep it simple no hazardas
bold prints, minimal furniture if possible, no dark furniture,if you do lighten it up with light accessories in the tonings you like e.g cushions, candle in glass lantern throw rug on bed.

decorating is a personal preference. But pretty accent pillows in bright/vibrant colors or patterns may be an option. Adding a mirror to a wall may help make the room look larger and will reflect the existing lamp light to add more light. But if the wall color is dark, then the color should be lighter to begin with to make the room light. Too much furniture and clutter may also make your room feel smaller than it actually is. Can you use candles as an accent and for lighting? Can you hang a small string of white "twinkle"/holiday lights in a large indoor plant (I have a Ficus tree indoors) or around a portrait frame? A bit of light and drama instantly. If you haven't money for changing dark walls then try and accent the room with lighter colors and soft fabrics. lamp shades,Table runner, pillows, paint the table/dresser, white rug( off-white, or any pale color to match room) under table, in front of door, in front of bed, etc. Possibly paint an accent on the wall? one defining horizontal stripe all around the room, like dividing the room for effect? Check out all the HGTV in-home and design places on the web and the DIY channel has good ideas too.
