I've heard it reported that Islam considers it a sin as you can't get water to touch your skin. The Old Testament also makes a comment about how you "shouldn't pierce or cut your skin", but it's a weak argument that that's a sin.

In a lot of cases, I suspect it's left up to the interpreter. Religions that have a problem with it probably historically competed with religions that had tattooed members. The enemy of the church was inked, an easy to recognize thing, and therefore tattooing was evil.

Side comment: someone mentioned on a previous similar question that early Christians tattooed themselves for identification to each other - something about how that's where the fish symbol came from. I'm not sure on the veracity of this, but it's intriguing.

In leviticus it says that tattoos are a sin, or more specifically "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD." Check out Leviticus, chapter 19, verse 28.

I'm not a christian, so I suppose it doesn't matter. lol But then again, times have changed right? If we still took the bible as seriously as people did 100 years ago, we wouldn't be able to eat beef burgers, shave our legs or wear/use anything made of linen or wool! haha

I believe it's considered 'forbidden' in Islam. And there are many Christians who make arguments that Christianity forbids it, although there are counter-arguments to this - basically, that there are many other things that the bible says not to do which are considered entirely normal in modern society and which no Christian would think twice about. It's one of those arguments where the facts seem to be able to support the point of view of either side.

Hope this helps!

In the Jewish religion you cannot be buried in a Jewish Cemetery if you have a tattoo, but it is not a sin.

Christianity. in the bible it does say do not mark your body; however, it's nothing that God would not forgive you for doing. I personally wouldn't "willfully sin" if i know its something God is against.

If you can't get buried in a certain cemetary because of a tatoo, just get the undertaker to get a cheesegrater or something and take it off after you die. I sort of stole this joke from Lenny Bruce.
