you mean the icons of shortcuts?
right-click it
click "properties" in context menu
click button "change icon.." under tab "shortcut"
click to browse for your desired icon and click "open ",click "apply" and "ok" to finish.
you can also paint and draw a icon to create it yourself as you like with some icon developer application programs and save it and use it for your desired icon.

There are two ways one to use already available with windows xp or use icon of your own choice.

In your case I will guide you for pre-installed icons in xp.

When you are on Desktop put cursor on the icon of your own choice then right click
Click Property
then you will see change icon click this tab
choose icon you like then click OK and leave.
Isn't it easy.
Usually people want to change icon
or want to replace icon of their choice
or want to change the text in icon by their choice.

For further fun in icons you can trace some answer I have already given or send mail to nihon94@yahoo.com

You know that's a good question...but I have no idea if that's even possible to change any task bar or systems tray icons...There might be a program to do that, but I don't think so...The only thing I've been able to change in there is the the Time Icon to the Lclock style which looks pretty cool...
