First of all, be wary of some of the answers above. Why would you even bother risking your life for a few dollars in your wallet? Attempting a disarm is very risky even with years of training. You could end up getting killed when all they wanted was your money.

Now, if it was life or death, or some sort of sexual assault, then yes, I would attempt a disarm. However, if you attempt a disarm without even knowing what to do you are probably not going to survive. Obviously, there are situations where you must try to disarm them, but it will be difficult without training. Personally, I would recommend finding a great reality based self defense school that teaches that kind of stuff.

Some advice:
Photocopy everything in your wallet that you would need to cancel (credit cards, video rental cards, etc)
Don't carry around lots of cash if you don't have to
Be aware of your surroudings. Many people get robbed because they make bad choices.
Don't flaunt or let anyone see your money. (why encourage someone to rob you)
If you do get robbed, try to remember as many details about them as possible (what they looked like, how tall were they, what were they wearing, tattoos, etc). You need to give the police something to work with if you want them to catch the guy.

If someone is threatening to shoot you over a couple bucks, or even a bunch of money, it's just not worth it. Give them the money and live another day.

Sincerely,

Anyone who tells you that its a good idea is to counter a person armed with a gun with hand strikes has obviously never had a gun shoved in their face. The answer above mine is pretty right on. Act calm, even if you are scared out of your head. Don't make any sudden moves and keep your voice level, chances are, is that your robber is high or trying to get so.

Comply with them. Give them nothing more than they ask for. Try your very best to remember every thing about them that you can. Color of clothing, approx. age, weight, height, race, hold the gun in right or left hand, style of speech, direction came from or went to, any tattoos, glasses, missing teeth, and if you saw their vehicle, get all the info. you can about it. If it is at all possible, see if you can get them to touch something...fingerprints could be lifted from it. If there were any witnesses, try to find out who they are and get a statement from them.Get as good a picture of them as you can, what they had, what they did. When you feel safe, call the police and give them the above info.

Don't, for Christs sake, even contemplate taking advice from Evilprince. You'll end up the same as he will - DEAD!

Give 'em what they want, say 'thank you, sir" and get the hell to home so you can change your underwear!

Give them what they want, and hope that they don't kill you. Once someone gets the driop on you, there is little you can do, even if you are a martial arts artist.

Personally, if i am in striking distance, i will try to counter by grabbing the gun fast, while kicking them in the balls or punching in the stomach, then once they bend down, i DDT their damn head straight to the ground.

If they are at a distance, i will try to lure them in to get closer so i can get in striking distance.
I am a guy that takes nothing from nobody, i fight back even if it can cost me my life.
