hmm better check with state fish and game, I don't know if rimfires are legal for coyote there.

but me, I'd go .243 just for distance and stopping power.

People have been killing coyotes for years within fifty yards with the .22 rimfire; use high speed hollow point ammo and try for head shots. If legal in Ohio to hunt coyote with a rimfire then go for it. If you're going to be shooting at further than say 30 to 50 yards, switch to a centerfire. The .243 is a bit of an overkill for coyote but works just fine. If you're not going to be shooting THAT far, consider the .22 Magnum.

Having a little trouble deciding what to get? You have asked a question like this what, 3 or 4 times? HAHA. I love my 243 and from another question you said you were looking at the mossberg 100 ATR. ITs a great gun, and the 243 is by far better than any rimfire. A 243 is a high powered rifle, so its gonna drop it dead in its tracks with one shot. A 22 or 17 or any other rimfire is going to take like 5 shots to even kill it. they are way underpowered for any big varmint. I have shot two coyotes with my Remington 22 and one bounced off his head, and the other hit it around the vitals, and it didnt die. MY friend shot it a little later with his shotgun when it ran by him. DONT shoot coyotes with rimfires, its a waste.

.243 is plenty of power to stop a coyote I use .223 AR-15's. A .22 rimfire wouldn't be very good round I know coyotes arn't that big and i've killed them with 17 HMR's before but a .22 is a little small, quiet but small. You'd be better off with the .243 or a 22-250. Good luck

The top 4 weapons for coyotes in order.
223, 22-250, 243, 25-06.
Any one of these are outstanding varmint/coyote calibers.
22 Rim Fire or .17 Rim or Center fire are only for small varmints, the .204 is marginal at best.
But this is my opinion and several .17 caliber fan disagree.
But what I look for in a varmint/coyote weapon and caliber is its ability to provide a clean 1 shot kill at 200 yards under normal weather condition in the areas where I hunt.
Where I hunt I have some areas where I have large open prairie that allows shots to 1 mile or more if you wonted.
The winds coming across those open prairies can play havoc on too light of bullet plus the range in which I shoot.
So this rules out such calibers as the (wildcat .15 caliber), all .17 calibers and .22 rim fires,
Because or range and wind.
I’m not saying they cant kill a coyote, under 100 yards in low wind the .17 with a V-Max projectile would do a number on coyotes.

I work on the side in the field as a State Licensed Nuisance Wildlife Controller for the state in which I reside, I specialize in predators.
Some days I cant pick ideal conditions to operate due to the situation wind/weather so I depend on several choice weapons to resolve the situation.
First choice is the 223, next is the 25-06 but if I have too much wind and drizzle I bump up to a 308 shooting 130 grain varmint Ballistic Tips.
But I work around live stock on working ranches where over penetration can be a problem.
That why I only shoot Varmint style Ballistic Tip ammo, 223 and 25-06 never exit the coyote at the range I shoot them they explode on contact where as the 308 Varmint style Ballistic Tip can exit the coyote under 150 yards but once it gets 10 yards past the coyote the bullet fragments are no longer dangerous.

Based on this I recommend any of these calibers and the Varmint Ballistic tip ammo 223, 22-250, 243, 25-06.

That my opinion.

all good ideas yet 22-250 would be the flattest shooting in case your shooting long selection. each so often a leary coyote wont come right into a call and stay 3 hundred yards. 22-250 will do ideal at those stages and make you chuffed. 22 magazine you constrained to approximately one hundred-one hundred fifty yards would be maximum inexpensive. 2d maximum inexpensive is the .223 and could carry out t0 3 hundred yards in low no wind circumstances. 243 is a physically powerful option to approximately comparable value as 223 yet greater knock down. you are able to hunt deer, hog, and in states with elk its the smallest high quality allowed for elk. So the 243 would be a multipurpose high quality. yet while merely after coyotes 22-250 is the terrific of the bunch. i'd look at savage rifles. Savage stevens modle 2 hundred is the main inexpensive and could do merely superb. in case you pass with the 243 i propose marlin xs7. this is going to likely be the main inexpensive and that i've got heard good issues. they look alot like the savage. 22 magazine i'd %. marlin or savage. Howa and weatherby leading edge would be yet another sort you need to to look at for the money. 22-250 i'd %.. Im saving for an elk rifle yet im getting a 22-250 for coyotes next probable the savage sort sixteen yet savage makes camo sort 10 predator rifles additionally that are astonishing yet are seven-hundred$ selection. the type sixteen is greater on your funds and stainless barrel. Stainless has been shown to have longer barrel life than blued. thats a plus with me.

If you are going to use a rimfire, you had better aim for the head, and that will limit your range to 50-75 yards with the 22mag, I would hesitate to use a long rifle on coyotes because Ive seen people do it and the dog just runs off...
Better to stick with the 243, as long as this is legal to use in your state. If you are buying a new gun and ammo price is the factor. Get a 223, its made for this type of hunting.

.243 all the way. Coyotes are tough animals, and .22 is just too small of a round to bring them down. .243 will work good.

i would use either a 223 or 22-250 depending on range under 250-300yards max I'd use 223 also it's alot cheaper to shoot 223 than 22-250 I use 22-250 were I live we have problems with coyotes so I like the 22-250 because it will reach out and hit the target

The 243! It was designed as a varmit round that could double as a deer cartridge. It is perhaps the ideal coyote round.
