Explain why an athlete must exercise harder or longer to achieve a maxium heart rate than a person who is not as physically fit.

because their hearts are used to excercising.

because the heart muscle is very conditioned, it can pump more blood with each pump than the heart of someone who is not physically fit. So a fit person's heart can beating at say 100 bpm will pump more blood than an unfit persons heart also beating at 100bpm.

caz the excersized heart is apt to it and it is norm for it when the person is active. but in a weak person caz not normal to be active the heart should work harder from the beginning.
