but, if there had been no death penalty in ancient Rome, then Jesus would never have "died for their sins"

Quite a conundrum, eh?

Should any Christians support sin, since that is why Jesus died?
I.e., the fact the Jesus died because there was the death penalty is not an argument for Christians to support the death penalty.
The directive of "life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe" was given to discourage excessive retribution.
Personally, I'm not particularly for or against the death penalty. For me the relevant factors would have to do with society's responsibility to protect its members and its ability to do so without the death penalty, and the punishment being proportionate to the crime and thereby serving justice.

That is a good point. I do not support the death penalty, but I can see why people would. I live in Canada where we don't have the death penalty anymore, and that is kind of comforting to me. I think that people need to go with their conscience on this one.

No, Christians should not support the death penalty. People are put to death because man himself is unmerciful and makes unrighteous laws. But as a believer if a man is guilty or worthy of death, then the Lord Himself will decide when he should go and how. The Word of God itself says, "Thou shalt not kill". Anyone who votes for the death of a person is a partaker of murder and will reap the punishment of a murderer..

My personal beliefs as a Christian: I don't support the death penalty. I think that God is the one who should decide what they deserve, not us. And the 'eye for an eye' thing is Old Testament stuff, and irrelevant if you follow by the New Testament's teachings.

I support the death penalty and I am a christian. I believe in the term "Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth". That and "what comes around goes around" that's Karma.

I prefer life in prison because there are a lot of people in the death row who are not faulty of the crime they are accused of. : )

Not all Christians dredge up the "eye for an eye" bit.

I certainly don't.

Yes, but sparingly. The Gospel doesn't forbid it, but it says it should be very rare.
