Actually it sounds like 175 for a new clutch disk, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Resurfacing the flywheel is normal when replacing the clutch. 800 for labor is a little high figure 4.5 hours for removing the gear box and add one hour for the flywheel remove/install 65 dollars machine shop (surfacing) and don't forget to replace the rear crankshaft oil seal while your there. Shop around! Your mechanic is asking over dealership prices. $1,000 for a clutch on a 2,000 car!

Without researching I think the flywheel is part of the clutch mechanism. I doubt whether the home mechanic would be able to do this. You would require specialist tools as i would think the gearbox would have to be lowered. I would be interested to know a bit more about how your car "just stopped".

You can't do it yourself because it needs to be resurfaced and to resurface a flywheel you need a machine shop and some machining knowledge/ability. Seeing as how your last line says you know nothing about cars Im guessing you have no access to a machine shop or the ability. Take it to a garage and have the pros do it so you don't fk up your car or kill yourself

Your last statement answers your question for you. This is not something you can handle if you "know nothing about cars." Auto mechanics knowledge or experience and specialized equipment would be necessary.
