If you don't leave a tip, I wouldn't recommend eating there again. You may get a little something extra in your meal next time. Also, it would make a good impression, if you went back at a later time and gave the waiter a tip then.

If I don't have enough cash on me I use my credit card then put the tip on the table as well as putting "tip on table" in the tip section since I've been victim of people putting in their own tip.

Or you could ask the waiter when he next works and give him a tip later on.

As for "if you can't tip don't go out to eat" that is ridiculous. Tipping is not required, anywhere. It is expected but is never required. He could make it up the next time he goes to the restaurant or give the guy a tip later if he so chooses.

When I am in this situation I will ask when the waiter is working again and stop by with a tip when I have the money.

The gratuity should be considered before eating out. If you cannot afford to tip, go to McDonalds where they are paid minimum wage. Waiters and Waitresses are not paid the minimum wage because the IRS feels you are receiving a tip. Therefore, when you fail to tip them, technically, they paid to wait on you because they get taxed on the presumption that you did tip.

No, he doesn't want your old gum. If you can't afford to tip, you should be eating out.
