If he had gone through investigation and found the tests normal, then he has an "essential hypertension". It is having high blood pressure which is not caused by any other disease. There are many different medicines he could take. If he feel uncomfortable with what he has now, then he could try other group of medicine. However, it won't be that safe to try and take anything without the doctors prescription so he needs to consult a doctor for that. Important to know that taking the prescribed medicine is important if the blood pressure gets too high.If he could not take any medicine the diet he is taking would be of much help - watch out with his salt intake (he needs to be aware of the salt content of what he eats). Encourage to be out of stress, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. There are herbal remedies as well. Having high blood pressure for the rest of his life is not true. It would depend on himself to do something to have control of his blood pressure.I had such kind of high blood pressure and I hate taking medicine but my blood pressure has been alright now though it is still going up sometimes especially when I lack sleep. Keep going without alcohol,no smoking, avoid stress, and have a well balanced diet and he could get rid of such high blood pressure.

I have had high blood pressure since I was 32yrs and am now 47yr old. They do not know why and just call it ideopathic --meaning "no known cause" - hypertension. I usually run 148/86 and take 2 different medications daily, but when I get stressed, it has gone as high as 170/110. I have gone through the battery of tests. There are so many factors that effect your BP. Smoking, alcohol use, drug use, kidney problems, heart problems, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, lung problems. It's kind of like a process of elemination sometimes to get the answer. I don't mean to preach, but if you don't control high BP, you run the risk of systemic shut down of your body over time. There are so many different medications out and new ones everyday, that surely your boyfriend can find one ot two that will work and he can function with. I can't stress how important is. Otherwise you run the risk of strokes, cardiomegaly--which is enlargement of the heart and has no cure ---kidney failure, aortic aneurysm, aneurysms of the brain, blindness and a whole slew of other organ failures.
Please urge him to ask his doctor about any new meds that have come out. I take Maxide, which is a potassium sparing diuretic, and atenolol, which is actually a heart med used for slowing the heart rate and lowering the BP. The two meds are usually prescribed together. I have not had any side effects but PLEASE remember that no two people are exactly alike and should never be treated exactly the same until thoroughly examined by a doctor.
I don't mean to sound sexist, but men are more reluctant to seek medical care than women are. My husband is the same. He won't go to the doctor unless he's half dead. I don't know if they think of it as a weakness or are afraid of what they are going to hear from the doctor. Men think of themselves as the ones who take care of others and hate the idea of being the ones who need help. I've been an RN for 23yrs and it hasn't changed. Please just keep being supportive of him. You sound like an awesome woman and I hope he knows how lucky he is to have you. Best of Luck to You Both!!

Most high blood pressure is essential hypertension - it just is. No identifiable cause can be found. The tests are done to rule out a treatable cause, such as thyroid problems or renal artery stenosis. Those things are uncommon, but they have to be ruled out to diagnose essential hypertension.
If the medications that he is on make him feel lousy, he needs to find a new regimen. There are TONS of antihypertensive meds available. Some work well for some folks, while others work well for other people. He needs to give his body two weeks to get used to a new medication, because a lot of side effects will disappear.
He should talk to his doctor about trying different medications. His doctor should be able to provide a few weeks worth of samples to see how he tolerates them. IT may take a while to find a regimen that works for him with minimal side effects.
The consequences of untreated hypertension will eventually make him feel worse - heart attacks, strokes, vascular disease. Once his body gets to that point, there is no fixing it. Prevention - with antihypertensive meds - is the only way to go.
Be supportive and help him help himself. Good luck to you.

I had excellent blood pressure my whole life then one day out of the blue i went to the doctor because I had been feeling like I had the flu and I had alot of swelling in my legs. My blood pressure was very high and I also had all the test ran and there was never any reason found for it. I am 34 and am in reasonably good health but i also have to take 2 pills a day for the rest of my life. I take Diazide and Diovan and I don't have any side affects with them. Your boyfriend needs to talk to his doctor and find a pill that works for him. Blood pressure is very dangerous and can cause problems with your eyes heart and kidneys just to name a few. I hope things work out best of luck.

Go to a bigger city and find a specialist. Some individuals have a genetic defect that is responsible for high blood pressure. He can take a garlic as food supplement. He can buy tablet form for that in health stores.

Some folks are that way. I'm impressed that his doctors have done the angiography to make sure it's essential hypertension. I know a lot of doctors who wouldn't have been so meticulous. Unfortunately, some people just have severe hypertension and have to have four drugs to control it. The side-effects can be a problem, but if he can force himself to put up with them, take his medication as prescribed, and work with his doctors, they can usually come up with a mix that will work with minimal side-effects. And he may feel better temporarily without the medications, but if he has heart failure and begins drowning in his own fluids, or a stroke and winds up permanently paralyzed, he'll feel a lot worse, so he needs some encouragement in that regard.
