The 40 S&W is a really neat cartridge and my next handgun is going to be in that caliber. $300 is a about right for a used one. Most of the quality new ones are in the $400-600 range and some really high end ones being priced higher.

That depends the condition, make and model but it sounds very reasonable. Used Glocks start at about four depending on whether or not they have night sights and how many magazines go with it. I paid $500 for a 'like-new' used, 1st generation Glock Model 20 .10mm with Trijicon nightsights and three pre-ban, high cap magazines. I've been kicking myself for NOT having also bought the Model 29 that was offered to me by the same friend two weeks later! That was during the high capacity magazine ban!
Best.

That's a reasonable price to pay a friend/relative for a used 40 S&W handgun.

what? you never heard of a .40 handgun? what about the Glock model 22. this is the standard police and FBI issue handgun. And as for the question it all depends on the type of handgun and condition of the handgun. go check out your local sporting goods store for more info on pricing.

It depends on the gun and on the condition. You have only given the caliber, which tells me that the value will be somewhere between $1 and $2500. More specifics next time.

Edgar; Aren't you sure you don't mean a ".41 Magnum"?
.40 [was] a common calibre -in lever-type "wild West" rifles..
-in fact, there were one dozen various .40" rifle cartridges -back in the 1880's;
(even a Winchester .38-40 was actually a true .40 calibre).
But I haven't seen a .40" handgun..
(unless it is very newish; like a .50" Cassell, you see).
