I was under the impression, from all the research I did myself and research done by local mechanics, that the SE and GXE were almost identical in every way except for an all-digital dash on the GXE (luxury) edition. However, I came to find out that there are some other key differences, including requiring 15" wheels instead of 14" like on every other edition Maxima from that year. Does anybody know if the power steering racks are identical, or am I going to hafta find somewhere else for a spare rack?

I work at advance auto parts We can get you a re-man rack for about $138.88 or that what the price is in my area and its got a LIFETIME warranty and we price match so go and find the cheapest price from your local area and we will match that. as far as differences in the racks I have only came across one rack so far working on second gen maximas. I'm not saying there are not two different ones but as far as i can tell and I own two 87 GXE's that both have different options and there racks are the same and for the SE's Ive worked on had the same so unless I'm missing something. anyhow hope this helped some.

P.S. I'm pretty sure that we ship stuff thrue our web site so check out http://www.advanceautoparts.com/ and if it doesn't work out for you there post here and ill try and locate you a used or salvage rack.

Yes direct swap. Difficult to do however clearence issues getting the unit in and out thru the drivers side. You kind-a have to lift the rack up and push then lift up and push three times out the left side. This is to get the metal lines past the transmission and brackets then force the pinion shaft thru the left side opening. Made worse if the engine/trans steering rack has leaked for years and years. I do not reccomend a used rack the boots/seals will be dried out. Buy a reconditioned rebuilt one.
