I think a year is too long. However I think sending them out after Christmas of 07 would be proper.

My recommendation would be to send an e-mail "Save the Date" to your closest friends and family in Sept 07. Then, send out the Save the Date card to all the guests 6 months in advance. (If you send anything over a year in advance, then there's going to be confusion about the year. Some guests may think that you are requesting them to save 8/8/07 instead of 8/8/08.)

More than 6 months is too soon to send. 6 months is a good emough to make work, hotel, travel arrangements. Because that's a long time off, and many things could happen. Not meaning BAD thigns with you & soon to be.... but ceremony, reception sites might be booked....you might have to change the date for some other reason.
SO 6 months is the you answer ;)

As soon as you want. It also depends on where you are having it. If it is a hot spot around that time (like mine is) I would definitely send them out now.
