I just installed win 98 se on an old computer from an old 98se copy installation cd.
The "speaker" Icon is not in the system tray and the device manager tells me it needs a driver. The device is simply called some generic audio device something or other. What can I do to get sound?

Windows stopped servicing 98 when vista came out, so it's not possible.

Download a driver. Head over to the Creative Labs website and get a generic driver - that'll work with pretty much any sound card.

Try windows update it might just have a update listed for that older sound card, I know Microsoft don't make new updates but one maybe there before they got cheap the URL is different than on your toolbar or the link in your favorites.
This worked for me when I fixed a friends computer that had Windows 98SE on it. if not try drivers guide http://members.driverguide.com/index.php
