My fiancee has been living with me in Canada for 6 years now and needs to go back to the US to see his family. Thing is he doesnt have a passport. He has his license but it has expired and also has his birth certificate. If he is flying from Canada into the US what problems will he incounter without VALID ID? Please help as he is travelling in the next month. THANKS

He will not be able to fly without a passport. Period. This rule went into effect in January of this year and is enforced.
He will probably be able to get into the U.S. on the expired drivers license and birth certificate, but he should expect to be taken inside and questioned before being allowed in. All information will be entered into the computer, and this information is shared with Canada customs ... so his chances of getting back in to Canada may be jeopardized if he does not have immigration status (which it sounds like since he doesnt have a valid drivers license in Canada).

You bet he will have problems. He will not be able to board his flight. You need a passport to fly internationally as of this year.
His two options are to drive across the border, and bring both id, and even then they may or may not allow him. Probably but with more scrutiny. So are you saying he has no valid drivers license, or no American drivers license? If he has a current Canadian one and his US birth certificate that is sufficient to drive across.
Or he can apply for his passport via a US embassy.

I think he needs to get a passport as soon as possible - and delay his trip.
It is taking longer at the moment because demand for new passports is so high. I think you can pay various agencies to act on your behalf to speed up the process.
Contact your nearest US embassy in Canada for advice or Google for more info.
"Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable."

I believe as of Jan 8, 2007 you are required to have a passport in order to fly....but for now you are able to drive across the border without a passport, but I think that photo ID is required...at least I would not try to cross without it.
It is possible that he will not be able to clear customs...
I would also get his license renewed...

Drive or bus across the border then fly from there. He needs a passport to board his flight. It may cost him a couple of extra hours but the flight will probably b e cheaper.

take his birth certificate and us social Security card and the expired ID. if he didn't give up his citizenship then there shouldn't be a problem.
