I don't know how things are everywhere, but where I live, in SE Pennsylvania, the police carry oxygen and portable defibrillators in their cars. Many of them are trained paramedics and serve on the volunteer ambulance corps as well. All have received some training in emergency treatment of heart attacks, and the proper use of the equipment with which they are provided.

The reason is that the ambulance squads are volunteer organizations, and the police are always the first on the scene. They are best able to handle "golden hour" issues.

My husband was an EMT for 3 years and is currently now a police officer. He has seen both sides of the fence. An EMT is responsible for the medical aid and the officers are responsible for the criminal intent of the accident/issue. If there isn't any, then they go back to receiving calls and doing their job and the EMTs transport the victim or patient.

police have codes and laws crammed into their heads, the demand for cops would not be met if they had to know all of that plus medical care.... plus the salary for cops would have to be raised and with all of the cops there are, that would make a pretty big dent on the economy
