The first thing to do if you owe taxes would be to apply for an extention before April 17. You actually have 30-120 days to pay it back, though the govt. charges you a fee. There is also an installment setup fee for amounts over $25,000.

usually returns must be postmarked on April 15 (unless you have been given an extension by the IRS) but this year its the 17th because the 15th is on a Saturday and the 16th is a holiday (emancipation day) in the district of columbia

If you owe money you are supposed to have paid the entire amount by 4/17/07, even if you go on an extension. If you go on extension and you end up owing, the extension could be declared invalid by the IRS.

to file your taxes they are due on April 17th. You may file an extension form to get more time to file, but the extension form is due before April 17th

BTW - You can delay filing a tax return (by filing an extension return), but you can't delay paying your taxes without a penalty.
