OK, I know that Darwin is the capitol of the Northern Territory, but Alice Springs is also marked with a star symbol on my globe (they both are) can someone explain to me why this would be? Is there a special significance to Alice Springs or what?

I'm Canadian and have never been to Australia so forgive my ignorance.

Alice Spring is the most central town in Australia. That's why it's usually marked on the map. It isn't a capital city.

Some globes used to have a place called Birdum marked between Darwin and Alice Springs. There was nothing at Birdum except buffers at the end of the railway line - which is why it was marked. None of the other Territory towns got a mention.

Globes are so small and have so much to show that they may use stars for different things. Check the type of star used against the legend on the globe, there should be one somewhere. If you want to know more about Alice Springs look it up in an encyclopedia. It is famous, so there must be something more to it than central location.
