I want to get the correct starter for a 4.9L engine that was not original equipment (ie, the model year of truck may or may not be the same as the engine).

that's a 300 inline 6. Ford only made like a billion of those, they all use the same starter long as the transmission is the same

ALL 4.9L's use the same 2 starters. You have the manual transmission starter, and then you have the automatic transmission starter, the difference is the depth of the nose that houses the starter gear.

If it is relatively modern you can look at the etching on the engine block and if you enter in the alphanumeric digits in your search engine you should be able to identify it, if you use the VIN but your engine is not the original engine for your Ford then it will not be accurate.

how many spark plugs do you have 6 then is a 4.9l
8 then it could be a 5.0l or 5.4l


300cc =4.9l
302cc =5.0l
351cc=5.4l hope this helps . now i belive the V8's use the same size starter ,
