my granite was installed and sealed. it is 4 yrs old and we have never "resealed"it because some people say its not good for the stone. but lately it feels more gritty and porous. can it be buffed shiny and smooth?

I should correct myself... its not a residue...its very clean . its more like pitts in the stone not deep or anything but areas where the smoothness have worn down to gritty feeling areas. would sealing help this or polishing?

It was sealed in the first place to protect it. It wears off. Reseal it. If not, liquids will soak into it and it will be worse by not sealing it. Just like decks and driveways, they are resealed every now and then. Think of it as waxing your car to protect it. Would you buff it smooth? (no wont do any good). Reseal it.

Your granite countertops should not feel gritty. At least if I am understanding you correctly. There should never be any raised grit in your stone with a polished finish. If you are talking about natural pits in the stone that is a different story. Sealer has nothing to do with the feel of your countertops. All that the sealer does is fill in the pours of the granite so nothing else can. Some granites don't need to be sealed, but sealer will never hurt the stone either. As far as getting it smooth, you could pay your local fabricator to come out to your house and fill every pit, but it would cost you a fortune if they were even willing to do it. Our shop would not, but we also inform our customers of the natural pitting so this never comes up. If they don't like the idea they don't buy. If there is a raised texture our shop doesn't have the equipment to take care of that on site, and I can't think of one in our are that does. Maybe a marble restorer would. You can make it shiny again very easily yourself. Buy a granite countertop polish. Lowe's or Home Depot should carry this or try your local fabricator. Just follow the instructions on the bottle. It might take a little effort, but you will need nothing but a rag and the polish.

You can get it buffed up again, but it will always be somewhat gritty and never totally smooth. The gritiness varies from what type of stone you have and what type of that you have. Granites tend to be grainy and never will be totally smooth. You buy the name, but sometimes solid surface is the best, if you want that smoothness. I hope that helped a little.

Chris had a good pointer. If you are talking about built up grime or residue, using a flat razor blade works great. Good one Chris! Then just use some basic buffing kits. I was thinking you might be talking about some major wear and tear on the tops themselves. You can hire a local stone guy to come out and buffed them up professionally, if that is what you need, other wise use Chris's idea.

many products are on the market today,
if it is a small area of granite tops,
i would get some cleaner and re seal
the counter tops a little elbow grease
they will be as smooth as glass,
try a brand new razor blade almost flat
and scrape off residue, that will clean them real
well also, a trick installers do,

go to a place like homedepot or lowes and see what products they have to cure the problem. I have seen kits that are for stone countertops.
