Take it one number at a time. Hold up one finger and ask him how many fingers you're holding up. Then put a little competitive tone in your voice and ask him if he can spell 'one.' Wash, rinse, repeat. Don't try to do them all in a day. A number a day is good, two numbers is GREAT. (This works great if he's a little boy who likes competition. I haven't met one who doesn't like winning at least once in a while.)

I was a 1st grade teacher for 5 years....we used music and Rhymes for everything from math to spelling! It works. Does your son know all his letters? If so make sure it fun and sing it...clap it....dont stress over it!!! You want learning to be fun and not a chore ~ your son will pick up on your frustration and it will make it harder for him to learn. Read as many number books as you can and have him follow the words with his finger as you read. Ask "where is the word 1" etc....Good luck to you! Please dont use the candy or treat meathod~ I left the 1st grade teacher experience to be a yoga/pilates instructor! Trust me! Teach intrinsic motivation, not extrinsic motivation, as early as possible!

Frog Street Press has books with songs to spell numbers, shapes, and colors! I use them in my pre-school class! They are amazing and my two yr. olds have picked them up very quickly. Look for them at your local teaching supply store. Be warned though, you'll never get the tunes out of your head!

Then state the punishments. day out, no play station for at some point, no television for at some point. No traveling acquaintances for one week. They should not be too lengthy, being grounded for 5 years merely will not take place! you are able to desire to abide via the policies too. you're able to not shout at your babies, it achieves not something and all and sundry feels undesirable. Hitting isn't an option for you or them. Then stick via what you have reported. (it truly is the toughest bit). do not pay any interest whilst they say 'i don't care' once you're taking issues away. continuously carry out what you're saying you will do. do not complication if he insists on having the final be conscious, you have the final action. are not getting into arguments, merely say, you recognize the policies and enable them to rant. After a whilst seem on the contract with them returned. pay attention to them and help them to confirm it truly is to make all and sundry's lives greater desirable. offended babies are unhappy babies they want obstacles. good success.

turn it into a game. Cut up some cardboard and write on one side the numbers in words and on the other side the number figure. Give lot's of postive praise when he reads the word and turns it over to look at the figure (if he doesn't know the figure put the amount of dot's on it) and has it right.

He could just be resistant to "traditional" tools - try a Reader Rabbit or Jump Start software they are fun-educational and kids really get a lot out of them. Good Luck!

When my son was learning to spell words we used a really big white board with erasable markers. So easy to draw and write on it and you have fun while learning !
