Stay with Sony, Canon, Nikon and Fuji.
Consider the Canon A630. Excellent on batteries when using AA rechargeables, 8 megapixels, 4X optical zoom. Has shutter priority, aperture priority or just leave on auto. Has viewfinder that can conserve battery life instead of always using lcd screen.

Sorry, I'm not a big fan of HP cameras. They do printers really well though!
If you are considering an HP, I think you would be very happy with the new Fuji F31fd instead. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0704/07041102fujifilmf31fdreview.asp

All of the major mfr are good, that is Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus, Sony. I'd stay with one of these. Check out the features at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

Stay with a 6 or 7mp camera. Anything over that can actually give you a worse picture due to sensor size and lens limitations. Take some samples before buying a larger mp value.
