The answer is " US " - many have answered it correct !!

War destroys societies and lives. No war can be won. Nobody ever wins a war. How can we love ourselves when we become as those who we wish to stop. "We have met the enemy and they is us" - Pogo (Walt Kelly)

But this immortal words of POGO applies in everything - even business.

I was deeply inspired and involved with this quote from the journal of Hon John Maxwell, an internationally known pastor and dynamic motivational speaker. I found that this powerfull pricipple is my master class and source in winning attitude, ides and techniques for effective leadership in my business ventures.

Type "We have met the enemy and they is us" in google and you'll discover thousands of sites, speeches, conference, work-papers, seminars, talk, lectures and so and so used it profoundly.

. . . and they (that) is . . . our own fear (that tries to hold us back).

When a person experiences an ' enemy ' do they generally recoil, run the other way, cower to that enemy, behave in a weak way, keeping their own self held back because they don't want that ' enemy ' to knock them down...aka...fear being like a bully ?

I've actually come to respect fear. I don't like feeling fearful yet I don't " hide " for very long when I come face to face with fear (doubts). The reason being is that I generally end up learning and growing by having had experienced that fear.

Fear can also be a " friend ". Fear is an internal voice that says " be careful ( you're getting too close to the edge of the cliff ). Fear can express the message of " pay attention "...or..." You'd better slow down and pay attention ".

So the message of fear can have us pay attention, be careful, watch out, stop doing something and do something else (smarter / wiser ) instead, to take another path.

Is " fear " the answer that would fill that blank space you're asking here ? Not sure...I'm not a " genius "...my brain level has never been " tested " to discover that or not...and it's not of importance for me to know any ' brain level numbers ' as that. My daughter (now age 20) was tested back in elementary school at the request of her school. The test revealed that she was at genius level. Interesting to know...yet...not of real importance on the big picture.

I will share this about persons who were tested to be shown to be " genius . . . I told my daughter (now 20) years ago when she was a child...That's just shows that a person can come to an answer a bit quicker than someone else....but, a " smart " brain doesn't necessarily give a person common sense or to be compassionate. I had told her this as she had asked me why another she knew from school was behaving in a rude way.

So...genius or not . . . I'm sharing my answer here...and that answer is " fear "...And, I don't fear " fear "...as it can help me become more aware and grow in a bright way.

"We have met the enemy, and he is us."

WALT KELLY, the words of Pogo in an Earth Day, 1971, cartoon strip, The Best of Pogo, ed. Mrs. Walt Kelly and Bill Crouch, Jr., p. 163 (1982).

This succinct expression was derived from a sentence in the Foreword of an earlier publication, The Pogo Papers (1953): Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us.

It isn't proper grammar, and it doesn't take a genius to see that.

am no genius but ... the answer is US or OURS depending on which person you are looking to:

We have met the enemy, and they are us

Evil or upsetting forces exist within, not without. 1
‡ This is a twist on Oliver Hazard Perry’s words after a naval battle: “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.” The updated version was first used in the comic strip “Pogo,” by Walt Kelly, in the 1960s and referred to the turmoil caused by the Vietnam War.
