I have 5 year old Female cat. I am getting a new kitten but, the one I like is a male. Is it ok to get this kitten? Or should I look for a Female??

It depends on the personality of your present cat. You should also look at the breed characteristics of each cat to see if one would not do well with another cat.
If you get the male, make sure it's neutered as soon as is recommended. Be aware that the male will probably want to mark his territory when he gets older; neutering will decrease this urge.
Your female might act motherly toward the kitten, if he's young enough and she has the inclination.
Make sure to pay equal attention to both cats. Don't let the adult female feel pushed aside; you may even want to give her more attention. If she feels threatened, she could challenge the kitten or hurt it while you're away. That, however, is a minute possibility - cats generally are not that territorial.
Either gender would probably be fine. It's how you handle the addition that matters.

No offense to anyone, but I feel some of these answers are too sweeping, generalizing and might lead the asker astray. It's not always the case that females are less territorial nor that m ales spray more, etc. In fact, 2 out of three of the female cats I've owned have been REALLY territorial and one downright nasty, to ALL cats regardless of sex. In addition, my two male cats get along quite well, and one of the males is buddies with one of the females yet that same female hates the other male even though he is very nice to her. One of these males is the newest, a kitten, and he gets along great with *everyone* -- even the nasty female cat!

My point is that you cannot rely on generalizations. What's more important is choosing the right personality and making sure you introduce your new cat properly. That and knowing how to handle cats' behaviors overall, of course.

Actually I have had two females , one older, one a kitten and as the kitten grew there was a war between the two. All males do not mark territory when living with other cats. Get the kitten you want, besides males are cheaper to get castrated than spaying a female.and they have less problems after they are neutered.

I don't think it matters. I have 9 cats, Most of mine are females. I find the females seem to fight more though, then male & female. Keep in mind, another kitten and your cat might get along just fine.. or the might hate eachother forever. Some of my cats get along great they sleep together & bathe eachother.. my youngest kitty hates all the others and smacks them if they jump on my bed.. she's lil miss jealousy.

My oldest cat is male and my youngest is female. When looking for my kittens I chose them by personality and what best suited my household and it has worked out really well. Choose whichever kitten suits you the best, that's the most important thing.

well, male cats tend to be Territorial, and unless the female is spayed, she will try to get out of the house and come home with kittens. if the cat you already have isn't spayed, the male will give her kittens, and sometime cats of the same gender will fight over domaince. if she is spayed, it is best to get a male, because spayed or not, they will fight over superiority.

i'd call the male Batu. that is Ghengis Khan's grandson and the chief of the Golden Horde. a sturdy good male call and so amazing for a kitty. For the female, i'd keep on the Mongol subject and do Toregene. She became the mummy of between the Khan's. lower back a good call for a amazing kitty.

Male cats have a tendency to mark their territory with urine. Females are less trouble once they are spayed.
