I believe Earnhardt said that if Richmond had lived that he
(earnhardt) would not have had 7 championships.

Tim Richmond, born to wealth in Ashland, Ohio. A consummate playboy, he raced like he lived, hard and fast.

At 21, got into racing on a lark when he drove a friend's sprint car and was soon turning faster laps than the regular driver. He became infatuated with racing and worked his way up open wheel, culminating with a 9th Place Finish and Indy Rookie of the Year, 1980.

NASCAR Rookie of the Year 1981.

He was in contention for the Title in 1986 with Earnhardt and D Waltrip, but mechanical problems late in the season ended his run, finishing 6 points behind 2nd Place, Waltrip.

He would later describe the difference between Indy cars and stock cars as being that you "drove" an Indy car, but "raced" a stock car.

And that he did!! The man could race. He probably had the most pure, raw talent of anyone, past or present. If he could keep you off his bumper he would and if he get get to your bumper, well...he would.

After he got sick, in 1987 he made a comeback when he at least temporarily regained the strength to go the distance and although still ill, won the first 2 races he ran. He finished in the Top 10 in the last complete race he ran at Watkins Glen. He also had a 4th and an 11th among the last 8 races in which he competed. He had 2 engine failures in the last eight.

Even as an Earnhardt fan, I need to give him his due. That ranks right up there among the most amazing accomplishments in NASCAR, ever.

And he did party hard, probably as hard as Curtis Turner.... maybe, but one thing for sure...he did it with more style.

Tim Richmond Folgers car driver. Disgraced by Nascar for partying too much and dying of AIDS. Great driver, but not better than Dale Earnhardt.

Tim Richmond wow!!!! Thats a name you dont hear to much anymore....and the funny thing is is that i feel that Nascar has kept that name on the "down low"....i think do to the fact that he had AIDS. My father grew up watching him, he talked that he was a great driver with talent, but was a driver who unlike Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty could not always afford to be competitive, and due to this used the front of his car to determine his fate....as a winner or loser....

Well I certainly think they both had potential to win Championships. Tim won the most races in 1986, tied for the most poles (8), all while battling with AIDS. He finished 3rd in the 1987 All Star race and won his first 2 starts in 1987. NASCAR pulled him out of the car after Michigan and wouldn't allow him to race unless he handed over his medical records. Kyle Petty actually asked the Wood Brothers to let Tim race the #21 Citgo Thunderbird for the 1988 Shootout since he qualified due to his Pole at Pocono, however Tim decided not to pursue a lawsuit against NASCAR and disappeared. It's nice to see some people actually remember him. Davey Allison was an excellent example of talent. He learned a lot from his father Bobby and was always a threat to win. His respect for the veterans is one thing I think a few rookies should learn from. Nice question, worth logging in to answer.

Man, Tim was the nice guy I saw him on SpikeTV. I was born in September 1989 in just a month after Tim's death of AIDS at 34. He is still cute as ever just like Earnhardt did.

Tim Richmond was a good driver, with a lot of talent. He was widely know to party just as hard as he drove on the track.
Had a reputation for sleeping with anything that moved, and drinking anything that didn't.
He had good success driving for Hendrick Motorsports.
Most memorable moment, He posed for official photo for "The Winston" with his penis hanging out of his firesuit. It was not noticed until the photos had been printed and distributed.

I've read about him, but can't say I remember watching him race. I was born in 1983!! I was only 4 when he raced at his last race (which was actually at my home track, Michigan). But, even being a lifetime race fan, I do not remember him!! I have to say I think of him most as "the driver who died of AIDS", not an overly aggressive driver.

I remember him well and was a huge fan. I even have his autograph to this day. He had most of his success on road courses and at Pocono (which is like a road course) He was a guy who enjoyed his partying and wasn't ashamed to admit it. Unfortunately, it may have been his downfall, as he died of AIDS at a time when little was known about the disease.
I'll always remember his burnout in Riverside, CA back in June of '82.
