If you have Bipolar disorder, then you probably should stay on the medication. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Bipolar is a very serious mental disorder with a strong biological component. We treat cancer, we treat diabetes. Why not treat mental disorders?
Here are a couple of recent NIMH posts about Bipolar Disorder and appropriate treatment that you may be referring to...

A bipolar disorder is characterized by a chemical imbalance in the body! There is little evidence that a person outgrows the problem though various therapeutic techniques may help a person to learn to control the extreme mood swings.
The best person to advise you is not a layman, rather the psychiatrist who prescribed the Wellbutrin!!!

alot of the long term effects are not known-but wellbutrin is 4 times as likely as other meds of the same type to cause seizures----i was too scared to take it when i researched and found that out so my dr gave me effexor instead-they all have some type of risks i know but why times it by 4. i hope you can find a way to gets off altogether and wish i had some advice on that but i dont know about it---good luck to you

I don't know of any major ones off the top of my head. I've been on wellbutrin xl 450mg/day for about a year and it's been a total wonder drug for me. I haven't had any problems (unless you think weight loss and increased libido are bad). I don't think there is any effect that would continue after you stop. and it doesn't have the terrible withdrawal like other antidepressants. you should ask your psychiatrist about the effects (or a pharmacist) and ask your psychiatrist about therapy.

NEVER stop taking those kinds of meds without a dr's advice..doing so can cause SEVERE withdrawl effects....I would see the doctor first and ask him how to gradually come off it and if he thinks it's a good idea...best of luck :)
