Deviled means to add extra flavor, as in deviled eggs or deviled ham.

Devil's Food Cake is sort of the "oppostite" of Angel Food Cake.

you add spice.

For deviled eggs, it's usually mustard or paprika.

For chicken, it's usually hotter, like chile flakes or hot sauce.

Devil's food cake is an exception. For this dish, it just refers to how sinfully rich the cake is. The cake is so good, it must be from the Devil/bad.
