so next year for concert season, our band teacher is going to buy all the guys tuxes and all the girls dresses. i have BIG BIG BIG problem with this. i do not like wearing dresses..for various reasons. so i guess i'm just wondering if he really has the right to do that. i don't like the fact that just because i have boobs and a vagina, i have to wear a stupid uncomfortable dress. does he have the right to do this to me?

no, he doesn't. I would go and see your school principle and tell him or her that you are being discriminated against, just because you are a girl. This is 2007 not 1950. You have right as a person a student and as a woman. If you don't want to wear a dress don't. Stick to your guns about. If I were you I would start a petition. Good luck!

I guess it depends on your school's dress code but this sounds like it's an after school event. I can understand the teacher wanting the kids to look nice but to insist that they conform to such a strict dress code (and to buy the clothing for the kids!) seems extreme. I'd talk to a trusted teacher, my counselor or the principal and make my objections known. You may want to involve your parent or guardian as well. I suspect you are not the only girl to object - check with your band mates and see how they feel. The guys may also have objections to being forced to wear a tux. They're not the most comfy clothes in town either.

He has the right. He's a teacher and the band director. If you like, you can suggest having a poll among the girls--asking who really wants to wear a dress and as a group talk to the band teacher. . .or, if you really hate it, quit the band. . .go to another school. . .stop complaining. . .it's a dress. . .

When the date comes that you have to wear a dress, show up with what ever you want to wear. If the band teacher does not like it, then you can leave. But he won't send you home b/c the band needs you. I also hate dresses....

Well, I don't think he has any sort of legal authority to dictate what you wear...but he probably has the right to require all band members to wear the supplied "uniform."

So, if you are really opposed to wearing the dress, you can probably wear a tux.

I don't blame you for having a problem with this. Ellen Degeneres would never wear a dress....not that you're Ellen, but if you were, you wouldn't put up with it!! Um.. anyway, talk to your teacher privately, if he insists upon it, go to your principal. If that doesn't work, get your parents involved. Maybe they'll have better luck. If not, you might have to sit this one out. I would hate for you to have to do that, but I wouldn't wear a dress either. Ick!

I sympathize with you, I'm a girl and I'm not one to wear dresses.

BUT...

If the outfit is to be worn for school events, you should wear the outfit, everyone else has to so you should as well.

You could always talk to him about finding a nice pants outfit for you and other girls to wear.

If he doesn't go for it then you either have to deal with wearing a dress or quitting band.

See if you can get an appeal, if not you either wear your dress or quit the class because you are against dresses(are you a guy or girl)

Have an adult discussion with him and explain the situation, you may be able to come to a compromise. Keep an open mind.
