From a federal view point, if you have the proper permit from the BTF, sure, but I don't know about California state laws.

Unless you are with some part of the government, an armed part, if you don't have one you can't get one. CA has banned all transfers of assault rifles. There are perfectly legal ways to get round that ban and obtain a 10 shot version with a fixed magazine, but there's no way to get a full auto weapon.

Check with your State's office of BATF. As you apparently already know, fully automatic weapons are illegal in the USA for citizens unless certain requirements/provisos are complied with. Even then you'd be hard-pressed to explain why you are in possession of a fully automatic weapon if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time with one. Wrong or right, 911 changed a lot of things.

Best.

Hmm.. I know people in cali with full autos. They bought it before it was banned. But they never take it out of the house though.. you should know why. I've been to a shooting range before and the gunsmith was fixing up a AK-47 full auto. I personally asked him and I still think its a fixed up one.
