Let me guess. Are you copying from a Firefox window? Try a Safari Window. Try making a Word document and set the font to whatever you like. Now copy-paste into a new, blank Word document. No problem? Same with anything pasted into TextEdit (which doesn't use style settings).

This issue is with Word or AppleWorks or any word processing app that uses styles for document types. Firefox forces the Lucida Grande size 13 font into the document, overriding the style settings of the word processing app. If you copy text from anything other than Firefox, it should be fine. Until Firefox fixes this, we are stuck with this work-around:
After you copy from Firefox, go to Word and choose "Edit" > "Paste Special..." and then choose "Unformatted text". That seems to be the only simple solution at this time. Go to the Firefox forum (link below) and send this to them as a bug. Maybe they will fix it if enough of us "bug" them.
