Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).

The Catholic Church recognizes the power of sex when it teaches, "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul."

Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. A chaste person's body and spirit lives in unity and opposes any behavior that would impair that unity.

Masturbation is contrary to the human dignity of the person and anyone about whom the person has lustful thoughts, and the dignity of human sexuality.

With love in Christ.

The Bible does not discuss masturbation at all. This seems a odd since it is such a strong and prevalent human event. And, given that Leviticus has so much to say about sexuality, one would think it natural that the subject would be covered. But it isn't. Masturbation is not specifically declared to be sinful. Nevertheless, we must be cautious to pronounce something to be sinful or not sinful when God has not discussed it. Therefore, we have to derive principles from scripture on related sexual issues and see if we can wisely apply them to the subject of masturbation. The goal of the Christian life is to be pure in thought and deed. I believe that the issue of masturbation comes down to this. Therefore, I believe that though masturbation under certain circumstances may not be sinful, the desire to be sexual pure and holy should move the Christian to avoid it. Instead, he or she should seek to master the body and not give into its desires. The fight against masturbation can be a lesson in controlling the body which can have great spiritual benefits.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church

2396 Among the sins gravely contrary to chastity are masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual practices.

2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

The Catholic Church has always taught it is a sin.

Here is what the catechism says:

"Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." It says in Matthew 5:27-28. "You have heard that it was aid, "Do not commit adultery". But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart".

No my question for you is this:
Who are you thinking about or what are you watching while the act is going on?
That's the heart of the question.

Maturbation is self- sexual abuse.

It takes the gift of sexuality- designed to be GIVEN to your spouse for their pleasure, and makes it something you take for your own pleasure.

It is selfish, it is sinful- it is just plain WRONG.

I read in a book not long ago that neither the Bible nor the church make much of a fuss of it. If I have missed a verse in my reading, sorry.

masturbation/sexual activity outside of marriage is a SIN. The Bible teaches us to not let the "desires of the flesh" overcome our spiritual life. As Christians, we should "feed" our spirit, with prayer and such, and "suffocate" fleshy desires, but rejecting temptation.

For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please." Gal. 5:17

"Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. " Gal. 5:24
