Right from the state dept. web site. Passport, Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or non-electronic label visa, proof of onward or return ticket, and sufficient funds are required. An ETA or non-electronic label visa is required for tourist or business stays of up to 3 months. An ETA is an electronically stored authority to travel to Australia and can be obtained online at www.ETA.immi.gov.au or through participating travel agencies or airlines.

I would recomend to contact you airline before relying on the to take care of a visa at the airport when tring to check-in

Yes you do, even if you ARE an American citizen. All that means is you're the same as everyone else, who's not Australian.

This is from the Australian Government website.

Travel Documents for Entry to Australia

Everyone travelling to Australia must present a valid and approved travel document as evidence of their identity and nationality. The most common and preferred travel document is a passport.

Anyone who is not an Australian citizen also needs a valid visa or authority to enter Australia. This visa/authority needs to be obtained before travelling to Australia. Special provisions apply to New Zealand citizens and to people eligible to transit Australia without a visa.

Yes you do, but they are done electronically. You can have the travel agent do it when they do the ticket or when you purchase your ticket online - call the airline 1st - you will need your passport handy. Also the airport agents can do it at check in, but better not to wait until the last minute
