I guess it depends on who you ask. I like ketchup on mashed potatoes sometimes and in Canada you can buy ketchup flavored potato chips

French fries are solid
mashed potatoes aren't and the ketchup would just soak i and change the texture of the potatoes.

Probably the grease that the french fries are cooked in goes good with the ketchup. Mashed potatoes are for other things like gravy or butter.

Most people prefer it on french fries because they have a fried over coating instead of the potato's being mashed up with ketchup....Probably because it looks gross =p

Because fries are deep fried in oil and heavily salted; the ketchup makes the salt more tolerable. Mashed potatoes aren't salty enough- that's what makes the gravy sooo good! We love our comfort food!

Because you need contrast with food. You want something with "bite" surrounding wimpy food like mashed potatoes. In this case, both are "mushy"....If you found a way to make a Ketchup coating, that was crunchy or crispy in contrast to the soft mashed potatoes...then you would have something good!

It's mostly about texture. French fries are crunchy, and also have more added to them. Mashed potatoes are globby and creamy, and catsup would just get all mixed in and change the tast of the entire dish.

Put the mashed potatoes in flour and onions, and fry on the stove. I guarantee ketchup will go good with them.

Ketchup sucks. Fried or mashed. However my nieces DO eat it on their mashed potatoes and their mac and cheese and their turkey and everything else. Gross, huh?
