Fiction!!!!! clawing is to sharpen their claws. a "rub" is when the scent glands on their head and base of their tail rub off on the item being rubbed to create a smell only animals can smell.

It also feels good for their claws and they think it is sharpening them... trim their claws often, this reduces them clawing (HOWEVER NEVER cut into the pink vein inside the nail. they can bleed and it is painful and the cat remembers this and will be harder to clip its nails next time). You can also buy plastic caps that glue on top of their claws and usually stay for two weeks at a time, these reduce the damage from scratching.
You should also buy a scratching post treated with catnip.. this will attract them to the post over the furniture.
To treat the areas they DO scratch and arnt wanted use either animal friendly repellent, to completely keep them away from the area, or use a laminated poster or other hard, slick surface they cant dig into and put this over the area they scratch, they cant get the sensation they want and should stop scratching the area.

Cats claw at objects for many reasons. The 2 most common are:
1. They have scent glands in their paws, so they are marking their territory. The scent doesn't last very long, so they spend plenty of time re-marking the same objects.
2. Their nails grow from the inside out. They need to shed the outer lining occasionally to make room for new growth. It also sharpens and maintains the claws at the same time.

they are doing it to mark there territory. the cat has scent glands on the claws area. the only thing i can hint at for you if you want to save furniture is try some double sided tape on the edges where they claw and leave it there for awhile they dont like sticky and will stop clawing after a couple of tries. you can get special stuff at the pet supply store or get the extra wide from the office supply store. it stopped my cat from doing it.

When cats are scratching, they are honing their claws...
Get them a scratching post...they need to be able to scratch something to get the outer layer off their claws...

Maybe they are 'marking' something when they claw at it. But more often they are exercising their front legs and perhaps trying to get rid of the extra sheathing on their nails.
