I'm thinking about becoming a Dental Assistant to where sometime down the road I could become a Dental Hygienist.
Does this sound like a good idea?
Because I could go for my schooling to be a Dental Assistant and when I become one I will learn a lot from it and continue on to being a Dental Hygienist and that may seem a lot easier to do that way.
I heard it is hard to get into a program though.
Although I am still in High school I get average grades or better.
You never know I may change my mind by the time college gets around but I am very interested in this Career.
What do you think?

Being a Hygenist is a good paying job with a good future. It's great you understand that you become an assistant to get the experience and then move up once you get the education.

If it's what you want to do choose dental assistant or dental hygienist and sign up for that program.
I went to school for 2 years and became an RDA and also nationally certified. I finished the program knowing I didn't really like it and not long afterwards I didn't stay working in that field. Some history though, my family sort of pushed me into signing up for the DA program I guess because I kept telling them I didn't know what I wanted to do. Anyway, I went to a community college and it wasn't hard getting in but one of the first classes was very hard and weeded out alot of students who dropped out. That class was about the anatomy of the head and all. For me, not having had hard core science classes before, it was tough but I made it through.
I say if you are very interested, go and do it. If you find your niche, great! If not, change what you are studying and do something else. One word of advice, look closely at what each of these jobs are like when you go to see your dentist to try to comprehend if you would like doing that every day, five days a week. Good luck to you. When I was your age I didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted to do, it has had to evolve.

If you want to be a hygienist, don't spin your wheels going to school and then spending years as a dental assistant. Just go for it. It will be so hard to go back to school once you are out there working. Besides, the hygiene program is full time and you will not be able to work while in hygiene school, unless you want to work only on Saturday or at night and you will need that time for study.

good idea. the office i used to work at, the hygienist made more than the dentist. then again, she had big boobs.
