Whole grains are grains that have not been stripped of the outer shell of fiber and nutrients. Good examples are whole wheat bread (any bread that has at least 3 grams of fiber per slice, actually), brown rice, and whole wheat pasta. You don't want to eat too much, but it's the white bread, potato bread, white rice and refined sugar that are really diet killers. They raise your blood sugar very high, and that gets turned to fat. Whole grains are not digested as easily, and therefore aren't absorbed into your bloodstream as quickly. The fiber in them is great for cleaning out your system, and helps you lose weight.

I remember reading about a study done years ago. The groups that ate 1 slice of white or potato bread everyday gained weight over the course of 2 years, and the groups that ate a slice of wheat or rye bread lost weight or maintained, depending on the rest of their diet.

you need a certain amount of whole grains to stay healthy. read the ingredients and look for the words "whole grain" not "enriched". just don't eat too much of anything. whole wheat bread or crackers, graham crackers, Cheerios, and Total are some of the foods with whole grains.
