Sit within his line of sight (low to the ground) with your back facing him. Just sit there, and eventually the dog will become curious as to what you're doing. Perhaps have a snack in your hand for when he gets there to feed him. No sudden moves or loud noises. Good luck!

He does need love but right now heis scared and i think if you leave him alone and let him know he is safe and that your not trying to catch him all the time then he will get more of a peace of mind that everything is ok..
So i would maybe buy im puppy treats and call him and if he comes then that is great, If he dosent then that is ok too..
Gain his trust this way.. It sounds like that man or someone else has abused him and that is why he is scared..
When he gets used to you (and this may take a little time so dont get worried or upset) he will gain trust and come to you and then it is time for babying him and loving him..
Im not saying not to do that now just do it the right way, like for instance,
Buy him treats,
get him a nice nice dog bed,
Get him dog toys and so on and he will realize that you are not going to hurt him and that it is his home now..

I wish you alot of luck with this cause i know how hard it is, Because we had a dog that was abused and we had to do the same thing..

I swear by this tactic and it is different for small dogs and large dogs..

Again good Luck and dont give up.. Someday he will be your best friend!!

Chris is right...do what he says. When you chase a puppy or dog especially one that doesn't sound like he came from a very good home you're scaring him, and sometimes they think it's a game and they run, however, if he's been abused then he's scared you are going to punish him for something.

I learned that to get a puppy to learn to come you run in the opposite direction calling their name and saying come in an excited voice, they tend to chase you. whenever he does come to you you should reward with small treats and praise, eventually he will get the idea, but he needs to learn to trust you first, patience is key when training a dog to trust a human being. It'll take some time but the rewards are great once it happens. Also never use the word "come" when you are going to do something that they won't like (bath, clipping nails, grooming etc) come must only be used for good things so that they will come to you every time and a year later I still praise my dog when she comes. When she doesn't, I run in the opposite direction and it works everytime without fail.

Good Luck to you and bless you for taking a puppy from a bad situation, I hope he'll be very happy with you.

Look at it from his point of view. He was not well treated by a human, therefore humans cannot be trusted. It will take him some time, but he will come around.

We work with Rescue Dogs that come from some pretty bad situations. One of the things we do to try and build trust is to allow them to have their "place" where they can go and we won't bother them. We speak kindly and make no sudden movements. It usually takes a couple of weeks, but they start to relax. If a dog was badly treated it can take quite a while for them to trust humans again.

Just give him time and love- just like you would a person who has come through a bad experience. There are no bad dogs- only bad guardians.

You can try just working with the dog and after a while the dog will start trusting you just give it some time it might be in a little shock from being in a bad home into a go home it will get better when the dog start to trust you more.

You need to let the dog come to you. You can try ignoring the dog. This works for me. If I pretend my dog isn't there, he inevitably wants some attention. Working on the "come" command also works. The dog is probably running away because his previous owner would harm the dog when it WOULD come. This teaches the dog that coming to people equals something unpleasant. You need to make coming to you a good experience. Just be patient - you need to work at the dog's pace. He'll come around eventually. Good luck!!

Just be quiet for now and let the pup come to you. You must earn his trust. It will come with time. Feed him, give him water and a safe warm place to sleep and don't try to be too overbearing. He will learn to trust you and will love you unconditionally.

Take some pieces of chicken and try to coax the dog to you. DO NOT CHASE IT !!!! That will make matters worse.
To be able to come to you, they need to trust you and it takes time.

Chasing the dog will make him afraid. Allow him to come to you. Since it sounds like he did not come from the best home, you need to take it slowly. Also, you should make sure he is up to date on all of his vaccinations, etc.

don't chase...i had a wild dog that i found. what i did was hand fed the dog. the only way she could eat was if she came and ate out of my hand. make sure ur dog is not food aggressive i don't want him to bite u. while the dog is eating praise him and make him feel safe(no loud noises that could scare him). do this often and he should come around but do not chase him......hope he does well!
