Depends... will they be truly sorry for their 'sins' - if so, God will forgive them.

So NO - all soldiers will NOT go to Hell.

However - all civilians who go round stomping on ants and spiders might. after all, the commandment says "Thou shalt not kill," it doesn't say thou shalt not kill any species of like size, or like ability, it says "THOU SHALT NOT KILL." - so I'm fooked for a start!

Ecclesiastes 3:8 declares, “there is…a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. In a world filled with sin, hatred, and evil (Romans 3:10-18), war is inevitable. Some wars are more “just” than others, but all wars are ultimately the result of sin. Christians should not desire war, but neither are Christians to oppose the government God has placed in authority over them (Romans 13:1-4; 1 Peter 2:17). The most important thing we can be doing in a time of war is to be praying for godly wisdom for our leaders, praying for the safety of our military, praying for quick resolution to the conflict, and praying for minimum casualties – on both sides of the conflict (Philippians 4:6-7).

God's mercy is endless and the only sin which cannot be forgiven through Christ is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit .

"2309 The strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force require rigorous consideration. The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy. At one and the same time:
- the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain;

- all other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;

- there must be serious prospects of success;

- the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated. The power of modem means of destruction weighs very heavily in evaluating this condition.

These are the traditional elements enumerated in what is called the "just war" doctrine.

The evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy belongs to the prudential judgment of those who have responsibility for the common good." (Catechism of the Catholic Church).

It's a pathetically stupid commandment. If you kill a bug, or put an injured horse out of it's misery, you will go to hell. This is not my interpretation. It is the only possible interpretation, as the words are simply "Thou shalt not kill". We have no right to reinterprate the words of God, thus we must take these words literally. It's nonsense.
The chap above me just educated me. But now we need a debate about what murder is.

killing in self-defense and protecting the lives of others is not a sin and it is actually commanded that you fight back if someone tries to kill you. besides, soldiers can't just run around killing people on a whim, but if you knew anything about the Laws of Armed Conflict (and read the Bible well) then you wouldn't be asking that question.

I think that the majority of soldiers genuinely believe that they are doing something good. In my opinion you are only committing a sin if you know what you are doing is wrong but continue to do it regardless. Based on this I think they will be given the chance to redeem themselves in some way, and will not go to hell.

In the bible Moses killed an Egyptian guard who was flogging an Israelite, and it appears that God forgave him for that.

Some parts of the old testament claim God supported and sometimes encouraged his people to go to war, so I guess it depends on whose side you are on !

The Ten Commandments in its original is in Hebrew and when you translate the Hebrew to English the best and word they could use in the King James version was kill, but the word in the original Hebrew means do not murder someone.

you have not read the bible through have you?

god commands people to kill each other several times in the bible. in fact wars are ordered by god.

murder is what is forbidden in the bible not killing.

there is a difference.

of course there are many soldiers that are not Christian and have theor own doctrines and beliefs of what is right to follow.
