when i was little my pet duck was nipped by my dog. she broke his leg and the vet wanted to put him down. my mom made a splint for him from a popsickle stick and wrapped it with medical tape. it took a while for him to heal but he did. we fed him lots of broccoli too and were able to release him. this is only my experience but i do suggest a visit to the vet.

'How do I help him without having to go to a vet'
You make me despair. An animal with broken leg NEEDS a vet - not to take him is simply neglect. Would you stay at home if YOUR leg was broken? No, you'd go to a hospital. Do the same for your pet please.

Go to the vet, it is irresponsible to not take this animal for care and in most states animal neglect to not treat an injury.
When do you have an animal that you won't take to the vet. Shame on you. This animal will most likely die without vet care. He will be in pain and stop eating, and the leg will probably develope an infection, which will to internal and kill him.

Please, Please take that poor parakeet to the vet now. I have a little parakeet myself and can't imagine that you would leave it to suffer. If you don't bring him to the vet he might lose the use of that leg and be in a lot of pain. If you care about it at all, go to the vet right away!

Stop being cheap, he's in excruciating pain.
If you broke your leg, would you have wanted your parents/spouse/family/friends to say, "well, we could take her to the ER, but that would be expensive, lets just try to treat her here." ?
Take him to the vet!!!!

There's really nothing you can do except get in to the wets. The longer you delay treatment, the possibilty of bad side effects gets higher.
