The little gem quoted above was from 'John'.

John: Unlike the major monotheistic religions, atheism permits true morality.

False!

1) Atheism is not a religion.
2) Atheism, meaning a lack of or disbelief in deities, has no structure regarding what is or is not allowed. It does not speak to morality, except to clarify that whatever morality is, it does not come from deities because there is no such thing.

2b) The morals of an atheist are likely to come from logic, compassion, wisdom, empathy, thought, instinct, one's parents, social norms, intelligence, and perspective, to name a few. These are highly unlikely to yield such a statement as murder is okay as long you aren't caught. That is the thought of psychopaths and fortunately, most people are not them.

Unfortunately, in the religion of AMERICA, everything is allowed, even murder (as long as you're not caught).

"God" himself mentioned stoning babies (Psalms 137:9) and the gifts for rape (a wife and silver) and slaughter (sacrifices). John's a real thinker there. We all know atheism is not a religion but it's the gall of his answer that really gets me. How dare someone associate morality with religion? It's like saying that religion exists only because of Jesus. A ridiculous untruth.

First atheism isn't a religion, never has been, never will be. The people that make that claim are brainless wonders.

Secondly, atheism isn't a belief system, it isn't a philosophy nor is an ideology. So atheism does not allow anything.

Society has laws and has deemed murder wrong.

So to answer your question, FALSE

False, of course. It's arrogance to assume that only in organized religion can there be morality. Not to mention that Atheism isn't technically a religion, rather the lack of one. It is in one's own best interest to do the right thing, so as to avoid retribution from those who would otherwise be injured (including the friends and family of the murder victim--there can never be a guarantee that you wouldn't be caught), as well as an encouragement for others to treat you likewise.

Morality is evolved. It didn't come from any god. Besides, the things that god told his disciples to do could hardly be considered moral. It makes me shudder when someone asks, "if it weren't for god what would stop me from murdering all people I don't like?" That's the thinking of a sociopath. That's why I believe it shows a real lack of character to be religious. If you are living a good life simply because you are afraid of retribution, that doesn't make you a good person, just a con.

False.
Firstly, Atheism isn't a religion.
Secondly- Atheism doesn't have any organized power structure that determines its morality.

However- it has been well argued and proven that morality does not require religion. The 'big thinking' atheist leaders of our time (Dawkins, Hill and others) seem to define morality as actions which don't contribute to the suffering of others.

False. Atheists are humanists which means humanity is a very precious entity. Atheists have morals and ethics its just they don't use religious dogma as their philosophical lens. Instead they believe in not violating anyone else's rights because it would cause harm. Therefore, murder is a violation of someone else's rights.

so a strategies as i'm worried if a god exists (and doesn't have a damn sturdy excuse) it benefits a huge insult (including faith) for permitting the evil that occurs to take position. If a god did have a sturdy excuse for no longer fixing the international up then faith probably should be a better insult than basically wondering it doesn't exist.

False in every way imaginable. One must obey the laws of the land regardless of what their religious or non religious beliefs are. And all will eventually get caught for violating any such laws. And when they get caught they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of said laws. Besides Atheism isn't a religion.

2007-04-13 11:14:15 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 4 1

Nope. Because Atheism isn't a religion.

In Atheism... an atheist doesn't hurt other people because then other people would want revenge and it would be a vicious cycle of never ending hurt for everyone.

That doesn't take a whole lot of brains except in the case of Christians.
