What are these 2 things? I have a feeling the answer is pretty broad with a lot of information so minute detail isnt needed. Some1 told me that Windows is Linux based but imitates Unix on the web, hence all the shutdowns. Is this true? Anyway Id appreciate it if some1 could elaborate on unix and Linux for me.

Thanks

UNIX is supposed to be the "universal" operating system that everybody will adopt. However, it ended up being TOO ambitious and was only adopted on VERY big computers (minicomputers and larger) until PC's with enough power can run them. It was designed in the 70's, basically, by Bell Labs. (I'm going off memory here, don't blame me if I got a few details messed up).

When MS-DOS came along (from Bill Gate's MicroSoft) many people quickly saw it as a feeble attempt to emulate the Unix "command shell". In fact, you navigate the shell in Unix almost just like DOS... cd to change directory, instead of 'dir' you use 'ls', and so on and so forth. You can write batch commands in DOS like 'shell macros' in UNIX to add additional commands... etc.

As early versions of windows are built on top of DOS, stability isn't that much better.

The truth is, there is no "one" version of Unix. The last "official" Unix That I remember is known as Unix System V, Release 4. However, different companies have their own implementation and all ends with -x.

Linux is a version of Unix for PC's that was written by Linus Torvald. While it is in most ways compatible with the official version, it was written from scratch, and remains one of the most crash-proof O/S on the market today for the PC platform.

Technically, there is no official Linux either. Many companies sell different implementations / distributions of Linux with their own support plans. Red Hat, Mandrake, Linspire (formerly known as Lindows), and many more. There are also volunteers out there making their own Linux distros (distribution packages) such as Ubuntuu. So the Linux scene is a bit chaotic. To ensure compatibility you have to check a LOT of your existing stuff.

Windows is in no way related to Linux. If it was, it wouldn't be crashing this often! :)
