I have an adult non relative living in my household for the entire tax yr of 2006. They have no income. Can I claim them as a dependant?

Can you supply a website to verify any positive information you provide?

Thank you so much for your help!

ok, I visited 'irs.gov" it stated that they needed to pass a Relationship or Member of Household Test.

So I googled "Relationship or Member of Household Test" and it stated:

Relationship or Member of Household Test
One of the five tests to see if you can claim someone as your dependent. To pass the relationship test, the person must be related to you in at least one of the following ways:

and the last one was:

6. Anyone else who is not related to you, but who lived in your home for the entire year (and is not your spouse).

So since they are not related but HAVE lived with me the entire yr it looks like they ARE a dependent.

Does anyone agree or disagree with my interpretation of that?

Well, you're hitting the jackpot today on wrong answers.

If you provided over half of their support, you most likely could given the info you provide in your question. There are a few more requirements, but it sounds like you meet the main ones that usually give trouble. See Chapter 3 of IRS Publication 17 for more detailed information - download at irs.gov. This person would be a qualifying relative - the term does not necessarily mean that you are related by blood or by marriage as long as they lived with you ALL year.

For your additional question: you said they lived with you all year, so they passed the "member of the household or relationship test". Your interpretation is correct, unlike most of the answers you got to your question.

You can only claim a relative and then only if they can not be claimed by someone else. Go to irs.gov and key in 'who can be claimed as a dependant'. There is a fact sheet that will give you a list of who can and cannot be claimed. Hope this helps.

An adult non-relative does not pass the test. Claim them at your own peril.

I did taxes for Liberty Tax. There is a form to go through to tell you whether or not you can claim them, but my guess is no. If I remember correctly, unless they are disabled in some way and unable to work, you cannot claim them.

You can claim them if they are not filing taxes for them self and are not being claimed by anyone else.
