To me, no one personified the American spirit like Audy Murphy. Underaged and of small stature, he was ridiculed by many as incapable of "doing a mans' job" in the military. While on duty with the 3rd Inf Div. against the Germans in WW2, he went beyond the barriers others had set against him. In true American fashion, he faced his "shortcomings" head on. He did not turn tail and run, he didnt ask for handouts, he fought because real American face their adversaries, real or imagined. His heroism made him the recipient of the Medal of Honor. Americans today would do well to remember this great American. Face your demons, and kill them.

George Bellows a turn of the Century artist who did much to represent the moderates of America. It so easy for people to point to revolutionaries and the like but in actuality they do very little in the way of actually representing or personifying America.

General George McClellan : he sat outside of Washington DC with a huge loyal Army, a serious beef with Lincoln, and advisors urging him to take over the government via military coup. Yet he chose to not do what generals all over Europe were doing. He peacefully gave up his command when asked by Lincoln and proceeded to run (unsuccessfully) for president against him. That is democracy in action; that is somebody who believed in it.

I would have to say everyone who bought a ticket on a boat and came over here not knowing what would happen.
It took guts to leave everything you know and the people you know to start over in a strange place.
It has taken this long to breed the courage those people had out of us. Not many people now days have that much courage.

P.S. its Audie Murphy

My top pick would be Sybil.

Only someone with multiple personalities could possibly personify America.

Side note: G. Washington wasn't the first president. He was the first president chosen under the Constitution, but there were several presidents before him.
