We rely on electricity for
1. Heating and cooling our homes. We might not be able to stay in our homes without interior climate control.
2. Cooking food. Essential for food safety.
3. Refrigerating and freezing food. Again, necessary to keep the food supply safe.
4. Lighting.
5. Entertainment and education ... television, computer, radio, DVD/VCR/CD players.
6. Washing and drying clothes, vacuuming floors.
7. Personal hygiene - razors, hairdryers, water heaters.
Without electricity, the first three items I mentioned would be critical. My family would have a real concern because we have a family member in an electric wheelchair. He is not able to sit in a manual chair.
I can make a solar oven, though, from a box and some aluminum foil!

Wouldnt effect my family much! We dont turn on many lights, we only watch one tv at a time, two at the most, and we dont use alot of heat in the winter and not much AC anymore either.
My girlfriends family however would have to drastically change. Her brother leaves every tv on when he leaves to go outside, including all of his game systems!! they leave every single light on in the house, even during the day! They have 4 radios on in the house at all times. Its rediculous!!
