I want to do updates on several computers. First I need to know how to check for the version on each computer. Then does any one know a website where I can compare the difference in pricing and in the software for Windows Proffesionsal and basic. I am not a computer wizard and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Go to the desktop icon that says my computer and right mouse click it. A little window will pop up and at the bottom it should say properties. Click that and you will get what version you have. You can check prices on Windows Pro and basic by simply going to Microsoft.com.

To check the version of windows, Right Mouse click on My Computer and go to Properties. In the General Tab, the version of windows should be displayed along with other tid bits of info about your computer.

Home or Pro that is the question. Do you need to join this computer to a Domain? (Work environment where security policies are controlled by a server) If yes, then go with Pro, if no then go with home. That is the main difference between Home and Pro, no other major differneces should affect the way you comput. Price for home is considerably cheaper. If you are updgrading from existing Windows, make sure the computer will handle windows. Check the Ram, Hardrive space, and other hardware. You can run a Belarc scan on your computer, print it out, www.belarc.com then go to Microsfts HCL (Hardware compatablity list) for XP http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx

Just right click on my computer icon and select "Properties", this will tell you which OS is running and version. Also it will tell you how much RAM your computer has and what processor and speed.
