here is a list that may help. Note also that Greyhounds are actually great apt dogs. Outside of needing a walk twice a day they are in fact the ultimate couch potato and will sleep for 14 hours a day, not prone to barking either which is a must in apts.
Cocker Spaniel,
Clumber Spaniel,
Sussex Spaniel,
Basset Hound,
Beagle,
Basenji,
Norwegian Elkhound,
Dachshund,
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen,
Whippet,
most terriers,
Bichon Frise,
Bulldog (as long as there's no flights of stairs to climb daily),
French Bulldog,
Keeshond,
Finnish Spitz,
American Eskimo,
Lhasa Apso,
Schipperke, Corgi,
Shetland Sheepdog
Never should you have a German or Miniature Pinscher in apts.
The Min Pin is the 3rd worst rated apt dog do to its inherit nature to guard this will bark at noises which only creates issues with neighbors as well the German Pinscher.

I agree completely with roguegirl's answer. But furthermore, i cannot believe not one person put basset hounds! I'm surprised. I have two basset hounds and they are by far, the best dogs for apartment living. I had them as puppies in my house when I was married and they have now lived with me for years in an apartment with a tiny little yard and they're perfectly content there. These dogs, although not small just low to the ground, are very loveable, have a great personality and are extremely lazy. I work 5 minutes from home so not only do I walk them at lunch but also after work and that is all they need. A 10-20 minute walk once a day and they are quite happy to mozy on back over to their beds and sleep again. Also though, as others have pointed out, you need to understand the responsiblity of having a dog. If you're always on the go and not home too much (as so many people tend to be) then getting a dog is not an option. No matter what kind you would get, it is not fair to the dog. So many people do this and it burns me up. I spend a lot of time with friends and family at their houses so mine just come with me. Check them out, they are the BEST companions to have! Good luck!

First, you'd need to consider how often you will be able to be home to let the dog out. If you can't be home a lot, the dog may start to poop and pee in the apartment. You also won't want a high-energy dog if you can't commit to walking the dog at least twice a day. Finally, you'd want to ask whomever is selling/adopting out the dog how often the dog barks. Many people run into problems if their neighbors hear the dog consistently.
Do not just take the advice that smaller dogs are better in apartments. That simply doesn't apply to all dog breeds. Even greyhounds can be great in apartments if they are walked a few times a day! The best place to begin would be a dog book or even Animal Planet.
I have a dog who lived with me in an apartment for two years, and he was great! He's a Welsh Corgi, and he was walked about three or four times a day. He was older when I adopted him (about 7 years old.)

I live in a small apartment - and am around people with tiny dogs - please do not get a daschund or a beagle - they are loud in the apartment and can drive your neighbors NUTS. I have two large dogs, and prefer a lot of the large dog breeds in the city since, once they get their exercise, they are calm indoors. My best advice would be to go to a shelter and get a young adult dog (pitbulls are great dogs - just work with a reputable shelter and get the history and if you don't have the time to devote to rehab - get one that has done well in temperment tests). Provide the dog with about an hour of real exercise, and then a few walks, and he/she should be fine inside. Just make sure that your dog is not alone for long stretches of time (if he or she is - hire a dog walker to break up the day).

A small dog such as a toy breed that would require small amounts of room but before you even think about getting a dog check with the owner or manager if dogs are even allowed, the weight limits too because if you get a dog above the limits you will have the get rid of the dog or get kicked out. A good sized dog would be a Chihuahua, cocker spaniel, king Charles caviler, miniature poodle or miniature Schnauzer. These dog will probably be within the weight limits and would make a good dog but just because its small doesn't mean it wont need walks and as much care. These dogs still need as much care as bigger dogs but they probably wont take as long to groom and walk. one more thing you have to remember is getting the dog outside in time to go to the bathroom unless you want dog poop all over the place. If you do get a dog I'd consider going on www.petfinder.com because you can find dogs close to you that don't require a lot of space.

I have a beagle and a greyhound in an apartment. Believe it or not, I asked my vet the same question. Her answer was a greyhound. Despite their reputation for being racing dogs, they are so lazy and low maintenence. I recently adopted one and I live in a one bedroom apt. Its perfect. You still have to walk them and give them exercise, but they are great apartment dogs. Look into adopting a retired racer, but do your homework. THey do best with additional dogs, not alone and they do reqrire extra effort at the beginning, but nothing more than an puppy, its just a little different.
You might not find an ideal dog for apartment life (other than toy breeds b/c of their size). You just need to find the dog that is good for you. They will be your compaion and friend and you will love them regardless. Good luck in your search.

Honestly, as long as the dog is given plenty of exercise, they don't need a ton of room inside. Dogs shoudn't be running wild through your house anyway.

a small dog that doesn't bark.....try a boston terrier, french bulldog, dachshund, jack Russell, stafforshire terrier, something a long those lines. larger dogs need a lot of space and a big back yard to play in so it wouldn't be fair to keep it cramped up in an apartment.
