Turkey will not go to war with USA. The USA doesn't want them to go to war with the Northern Kurds, but will deal with it. Turkey may in fact, hurt the cause of USA by going into Iraq, without the full support of the US Military, and George Bush. They will probably get in the way of progress, in Iraq, because for one reason, the US Military will have difficulty perceiving the enemy from Turkish allies. A great confusion, may happen between their troops and ours. The best thing for them to do, in my opinion, is to first organize themselves, with the US military, and both Nations go in to stop insurgents together as a team. Anything else is disastrous, for both militarizes.

When you used the word WITH...did you mean as an ALLY or AGAINST the U.S.?
I work with a program where we sell our decommissioned ships (and other branches have the same program) to foreign countries. Turkey has bought at least 15 of our old DE/FFG's in the past 13 1/2 years. I'm sure they'd watch our backs, so to speak. I've worked 16 or 17 countries so far and Turkey is our favorite customer. Great folks to work with. They are in the makings of buying 2 more ships out of Washington next fiscal year (means a trip to Bremerton WA for me)! Do a google search on FOREIGN MILITARY SALES.

I agree with Speedy. NATO no longer has the same meaning and use in a post Cold War era. It is essentially meaningless. Anyway, we'd have quite a bit of a snafu on our hands. We'd probably have to remain in a diplomatic role the entire time. And I think so long as Israel did not attack Turkey, then we wouldn't be bound or expected to come to Turkey's aid. Not like we would anyway, especially if it endangered an alliance with one of our biggest allies, Israel. Obligatory intergovernmental organizational alliances, like NATO, may be necessary at certain times and under certain conditions (like the Cold War), but once they have served their purpose and the threat that caused the formation of the alliance is gone, so should the alliance. At least that is how Realists feel about these alliances, that they should only be continued so long as it serves us, and I agree.

The only reason Turkey would go to war with the US is if they just wanted to commit suicide. - Why on earth would you even consider this possibility? This is obviously not true.

We're allies. There are US military bases in Turkey. Our policy in Iraq takes into account Turkish sensibilities. We sell equipment to them. We have good trade relations, including Turkish-made firearms being imported into the US This doesn't sound like somebody we're going to war with.

Highly unlikely, I believe - but if there is a solution in Iraq that involves establishment of a Kurdish state, especially one bordering Turkey (which it would), then Turkey has sent strong signals for several years that they would not accept such a state on its border. Not hard to envision a US-Turkish war unfolding in this situation.

The only thing I could think of is that it might have something to do with Kurds and the US support for them.
