For the record, I do believe in Him. But some of my atheist and non-Christian friends use phrases like "Oh, my God" because it's merely cultural. People grow up saying these things. To them, it carries no particular religious meaning. It's just something that many people in this society are accustomed to saying. In short, it's habit.

Three reasons:

1) I do have a God, he just isn't the same God you have. People simply assume I'm referring to your God.

2) I get funny looks if I say, "Oh my Goddess."

3) Force of habit.

Have a nice weekend!

interesting question.

i was raised atheist, and converted to paganism in my preteen years. i am in my 30's. when i was a kid, it was like swearing to say "oh my god" even in my atheist household. i don't let my children say it (they have been raised pagan) and i cringe when i hear small children saying it. around here, kids say it as soon as they can talk, even the christian ones. i'm not sure when it became OK to say it, especially for children, but it's not allowed in our house.

we do this for the same reasons we don't say things like the "n" word for black people or any other slurs. it's out of respect for their beliefs/race/culture, or whatever. when i was brought up, it was taking the lord's name in vain to say those words and a very bad thing to do. so i won't do it now either. i may not believe in the christian god, but i can respect those who do.

Why would I say "oh my god" if I did believe in one? That would kind of be taking the lord's name in vain, wouldn't it?

I say these things because they are common in my culture, just as you say Thursday or June, despite not believing in Thor or Juno.

Oh my God... What a silly question! Well, I also say, Oh rats! ... Oh, crap! and Oh, f**k! ...

... but in *no* case do I "believe" in anything spoken. ... Have you never said "Oh, wow", without bowing to the Great WOW?
(You should likely delete this question for your own sake.)

Well MY God isn't the same one you worship, for all you know I could be referring to Thor.

And Hel, is the name of a Norse Goddess, if I want to say "Oh Hel" I will, She is after all in my pantheon. ;-)

Are you a Hindu? If not, then why do you say "Holy Cow!"

Common vernacular. Everyone says it. Doesnt mean a damn thing - just like when you say holy cow, youre not praising the Hindu god.

Linguistic idioms which are part of our language are in no way indicative of particular faith or beliefs. Also, there meaning and function in the language is not related to the literal meaning of the words.

I don't say "oh my God" I say "oh my god". Non specific. It's just a word.
