Maybe God is testing you like He did with Job.

Job was a just, upright and religious man who had everything taken away from him. Job questioned God but never blamed God or turned away from God. Job remained faithful.

You are being given a chance to prove your faithfulness.

I suggest you keep praying (and read the story of Job again).

With love in Christ.

Are you praying out loud?

If you are praying for an "audience" then you are getting your reward in full already, so God won't answer as well (Matthew 6:5).

What to pray for?
I pray for these types of things:
Something new and interesting to come your way in your daily Bible reading
Understanding the meaning of scripture and applying it
Forgiveness through the value of Jesus' shed blood - this is important

I don't know what people mean by bad luck. If you're living in a culture where there are hungry people, then that is bad "luck" in itself, so that's something to pray to be able to help out with. According to 1 Corinthians 11, if there are some in the congregation who like to get drunk, others will be going hungry.

Its not bad luck. It is God's will. It is said that God sends crosses only to His best friends because it is only by suffering and no other way that we can be moulded to become more like Our Lord. All the saints suffered greatly, did not complain and accepted God's will. We must stay with God in prosperity and in adversity. God's true friends are determined when they stay with Him in adversity, like Mother Mary and John at the foot of the cross. Will you help Our Lord carry His cross as Simon of Cyrene did? Offer your troubles when they come for the conversion of poor sinners and for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Following is a short story to help you understand why God sends suffering:
Malachi 3:3 says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."
This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement
meant about the character and nature of God.
One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.
That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at
work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity
about the process of refining silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He
explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire
where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she thought again about
the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."
She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the
whole time the silver was being refined.
The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to
keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a
moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know
when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy - when I
see my image in it."
If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and
will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

God Bless!

Do you see a pattern here?

You say things are good when you don't pray, and that things are bad when you do pray.

Might this be happening because you only think of praying when things are bad?

It is easy to forget about God when things are good. We forget that we need God in the good times as well as the bad.

When things are not going so well, we are reminded of the fact we do need God and pray for His help.

Everyone who has every engaged in regular prayer can vouch for this phenomenon. We all slip up or slack off, only to be jarred back to regular prayer by one of many of life's surprises.

Try to remember to pray to God during the good times as well as the bad, and I am positive you will see God working in your life.

Well one thing that I know, if I pray for "strength", I get challenges set in my path to make me stronger, so I pray for things like peace and serenity instead.....be careful what you ask for, you might get it, but it might be in a package you weren't expecting it to come in....
One thing that does help get me through is taking time to notice whatever blessings, however small, may be showing up around me, if I make the time to reflect on them, notice them, give thanks for them, they seem to increase....or maybe it just causes me to notice them more... I can even offer a great example today.... My husband got laid off monday, so of course we are worried how we are going to make it, and I own a business, and the economy has been really bad, weather is keeping customer traffic down around here, and having an effect on that too. We didn't get a tax refund last year, and have paid at tax time for the last 5 years. We are getting one this year, it's not great gangbusters, but it is equivalent to one week of the pay he will be losing, so I will try to pay attention and appreciate that at least....a blessing is a blessing, I'll take it, and be happy for it....

When you pray, it stirs things up, issues come to the surface that need to be healed...this is why when you do not pray, everything is "perfect". It is not "bad luck", it is the power of mind in action.

Odd, but the same thing often happens to me. It is not that every time I pray something bad happens but it is that anytime I make some real headway in my relationship with God, things go bad shortly thereafter. I personally believe it is an attack directly from Satan in an attempt to make me doubt my committment to God. Perhaps the same is true for you.

I have found that if I speak the words to Satan that he will not be allowed to cause me trouble....he and it will quickly depart. In otherwords..rebuke him. Tell him that he has already been defeated by Jesus and that with the help of Jesus you will defeat him also.

Maybe because when you pray you are doing all the talking. Try meditation, where you LISTEN to God instead of yammering in His ear all day.

I'd call it an overactive imagination. Or perhaps you are praying and then not doing "your part"? I don't think being Catholic has much of anything to do with it, though.
